There are several membership levels for participating in ASDP. Dues for members are based on level and optional chapter membership. Benefits and discount received vary between membership levels. Formal membership is open to individuals currently running or working in a sewing and design (or related) business, either full or part-time, in one of the following trades: dressmakers, tailors, sewing contractors, pattern makers, designers, bridal specialists, alteration specialists, authors, artists in wearables, costumers, instructors, and retailers. Requires business documentation (such as business registry number or license number) and two business references.
Emerging membership is open to individuals who are investigating or developing a sewing and design (or related) business in one or more of the following trades: dressmakers, tailors, sewing contractors, pattern makers, designers, bridal specialists, alteration specialists, authors, artists in wearables, costumers, instructors and retailers. Requires statement of business intent and is restricted to a two-year limit.
Student membership is open to individuals enrolled, full- or part-time, in a qualified program. Qualified programs of study are those leading to a certificate, an associate, a bachelor, or an advanced degree in a business or apparel-, textile-, or merchandising-related field. Requires evidence of enrollment on initial application and for student dues renewal. When a student completes or leaves said program, they will no longer be eligible for Student Membership, but may apply for Emerging or Formal Membership.
Retired Membership is open to individuals who have retired from a sewing and design (or related) business as identified in the qualifications of Formal Membership. Retired members are allowed to return to Formal Membership without reapplying.
Patron Membership is open to those who specialize in some related aspect of the sewing and design industry, and may include home interior specialists, wardrobe, color and image consultants, dry cleaners, retailors, and employees in a sewing-related business. Patron Membership is also open to individuals who are not on a path to a business in the sewing and design industry.
