The Master Sewing and Design Professional (MSDP) and Master Alteration Specialist (MAS) Certification Programs are national performance-based programs certifying professional customer sewing and design work. They are based on ASDP’s Standards of Quality and open to anyone with a sewing-related business. MSDP and MAS certification provides the professional with the prestigious credentials that validate skills and expertise. The evaluation of such work has four important goals:
Upholding high standards of workmanship
Educating the sewing professional in the evaluation of her/his work, aiding in the development of skills
The MSDP Certification Program tests the knowledge and skills of seven important areas: Fabric, Design, Fashion Illustration, Fit, Garment Construction, Pattern Development, and Professional Practices.
The MAS Certification Program tests the knowledge and skill of five important areas: Fabrics, Alteration Techniques, Alteration Fit, Alteration Overview, and Professional Practices.
The Apprentice Program Qualified (APQ) Designation is a way to qualify your skills to meet the requirements to take on apprentices utilizing the Department of Labor (DoL) National Guideline Standards (NGS) Standard Alterations Technician (SAT) program developed by the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals (ASDP). The APQ designation is for experienced alteration specialists. Once skills are demonstrated, the designation is granted. Skills are demonstrated by the completion of the Alteration Techniques, Alteration Fit, and Fabrics modules of the Master Alteration Specialist (MAS) Program.
