2019 Student Challenge
"Hollywood Look on a Budget"
Use your talent and creativity as you create a “Hollywood Look on a Budget”. We want to help you ‘Reach for the Stars’! The Association of Sewing and Design Professionals wants to empower the next generation of sewing professionals to succeed in this business. Enter this challenge and get some valuable feedback from industry professionals. Prizes will be awarded to at least one winner in each category (High School and University/College Level).
In this year’s challenge, we want to see what you can do when faced with the challenge of designing the look of a high-end garment with a limited budget. Although a limited budget can be considered only spending a small amount of money; it can also mean wisely spending your money. You, the designer, can choose to do this in a variety of ways, like recycling fabric scraps from another project, using fabric from existing garments to create a new design, or even using unconventional materials. In your Artist’s Statement you will need to list how much your garment cost to make and why it is defined as a limited budget item.
The student challenge consists of two categories, High School (Juniors/Seniors only) and College/University students. Students entering must be currently enrolled in a fashion-, design- or costume-related program and provide proof with a photocopy of a current student ID or class schedule. The entry must consist of one entire look, not just a single piece (as in a blouse or skirt) and must be created (sewn) by the designer within the past year. It cannot have won any design competition or been published in any media prior to this. All garments will be judged on quality of construction (both inside and out), and creativity as evidenced by use of materials, style features, and/or expression of concept. All garments may be shown on the runway, but only finalist will be eligible for a prize. There will be a panel of three judges with blind judging of the garments. Judges will be chosen by ASDP and will have expertise in the sewing or design industry.
A participation fee of $10.00 for each entry must be submitted with the online entry form. Limit of three entries per participant. No additional Fashion Show or Member Showcase entry fee will be charged for Challenge garments (includes finalist and non-finalists). Participants are asked to provide their own model (whom must be available for the rehearsal). If unable to provide a model, one can be requested, but ASDP does not guarantee proper fit of garment for the runway.
Entry forms must be submitted online no later than 11:59:59 PM CDT, September 22, 2019. Late entries will not be accepted. A signed ASDP Release Form will be submitted with the online entry form. All entry forms will be required to have a Title, Artist’s Statement, Runway Commentary, and a front and back photo for submission. Submission garments must arrive to check-in by 12:00pm CDT on Friday, October 18, 2019. If challenge participant is not able to attend the show in person, they may, at their own expense, ship their garment(s) to the fashion show location. Shipping instructions need to be obtained from the Conference Committee in advance.
The fashion show is Friday, October 18, 2019 at 7:00pm CDT, at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To encourage all your fans to come see your work, all entries will receive two complimentary tickets and discounts on additional tickets for the fashion show.
